BAY Marketing/Business Around You/Appreciation Events SF BAY (Walnut Creek, CA)

BAY (Business Around You) a Smart Circle affiliate, has moved from 5901 Christie Ave #500, Emeryville, California to 1501 N. Broadway, Walnut Creek, California.

According to their website, BAY is Business Around You, yet all the job ads simply state BAY. The company name BAY is so generic.

Beware of attractive, but possibly deceptive job ads which offer entry-level training in management, marketing, and sales especially if the ads state "no experience required". If you decide to interview with such a company, ask many questions before accepting employment. Will you be paid minimum wage or commission? Are there company benefits? Beware of invitations for an all-day second "interview".

Called 510-658-0133, woman answered with her name Kelly, not the company name.
She said BAY stands for "Business Around You". She would not disclose whether compensation is commission only, salary or salary plus commission. She said they have three divisions. She sounded reluctant to give information and she said the information that I want is given out during job interviews. I had to request street address from Kelly, 5901 Christie Ave, Emeryville.

I searched for BAY and Business Around You on the Alameda County Clerk-Recorder's Office website, no record found.

  1. LOL, I wish I read this before I actually interviewed with them. I have some more insight that I would like to add so future people don't get owned like I did.
    1. The initial interview was a scam. It lasted 5 minutes, an I literally got no information out of it. The manager Alon claimed that they were marketers with direct ties to huge companies and sports teams like the Oakland A's, the Sacramento Kings, etc. He made it seem like it was a strategic marketing firm aimed at helping these athletic teams and businesses around the area.
    2. I was immediately asked to go to a second interview a few days later and told that it would be an all day interview. I thought that it meant that I would join them in working in the office through marketing. Turns out that I spent ALL day from 8am to 7pm walking around going door to door trying to solicit and sell products to individuals at work. There were numerous times where the doors said "no soliciting" but it didn't stop the manager from still soliciting in the store. He attempted to sell products to people by saying "we are offering free Oakland A's tickets" when in reality, you have to purchase a $40 Oakland A's "VIP" pass. #dumb
Furthermore, I had to walk around all day, with no hope of ending the "interview" because the manager drove us to a different city 20 minutes away and I had no way of returning home. By the end of the day, I was exhausted and pissed off.
    3. The company sells itself to employees by enticing you with the ability that you can move your way up the ladder to be earning $70,000/year in 6 months. When you actually talk to the people there, there are very few people who have been with the company for more than 6 months, meaning that they realized what a scam this company is and that they were doing all those hours for nothing.
    4. Here is the break down of company positions:
Distributor (first 2-4 weeks with the company)
    - Salary is completely based on commission earning 25-60% of income based on sales
    - They claim that the average amount a distributor makes per week is between $400-600, which is a crappy salary assuming you make that much

Account Manager (next 3-6 months with the company)
    - Once again, this position is completely based off of commission, but you also make a profit off of the distributors
    - Account managers make around $700-900/week

Assistant Manager (next 1-3 months with the company)
    - $60,000/year plus bonuses
    - The assistant manager supposedly shadows the manager and learns how to manage their own branch of BAY and eventually becomes a manager who runs their own business

    Manager
    - $75,000/year
    - runs their own branch of BAY

    5. There are tremendous hours that are required to work for BAY. They work from 7;30am to 6:30pm 6 DAYS A WEEK!!! You only get a break on sunday. You have to literally be out walking around for 11 hours a day. One day was tiring enough for me, I can't imagine doing it every day.
    6. Everyone in the company has high hopes of one day becoming a manager, and when I told the manager (Alon) that it wasn't something I was interested in, he got butt hurt and went off on me saying how much I could be making and what a mistake it was to not go with his company.

This company is a complete scam if you are in the lower levels, because it's just the higher ups leeching off of the hard work you put in for the company

  2. wow i'm so glad i read this! I got an email from them yesterday and when I called it just didn't seem right so i decided to do a bit of digging and luckily i came across this blog. Thanks!! you saved me gas and toll and probably a headache :-)

  3. Chewy, you're EXACTLY right!!I hate to comment, but I have to since I've recently experienced this/them.... It's not all a total a scam (meaning they do pay their employees something), but it's ALL commission and totally unfulfilling work. SERIOUSLY. So for instance, if the sales are poor that week (which they always are), then no one gets paid anything. Period. Except the CEO. And as an employee, you have to put in 60-70 hours a week... And don't get me wrong, I love working long hours.. but I want to get paid for my time. And paid a lot, at that. And the work is soooo demeaning and embarrassing: selling A's tickets, Carl's Jr. etc. packets while going door-to-door in ghetto shopping centers. And they must put something in the water there because all the account mangers are entirely too positive-- when really they have no idea how shitty their jobs are. It's ridiculous and I'm so glad I got out while I could. I highly recommend NOT applying here.

  4. Wow i am So glad i came across this blog. I found this as i was trying to search for the address for this company as i was asked to come in for an interview tomorrow!! The website is so crappy. if you click on the facebook icon it takes you to ur own facebook page. Not to mention that there is no proper address given for the company!

I sure saved myself time and effort by NOT going for this interview!!

    Thanks folks :)

  5. I interviewed with this company yesterday and i can confirm that ALL of this is true. I am so happy i read this before my second round interview. I had a bad feeling about this from the beginning especially after noticne all the things mentioned above about the website and company name, etc., but decided maybe it was legit when i got 2 emails and a phone call asking me to come in for an interview....so i went for the first round.

i waited in the "waiting area" while "Drive Me Crazy" with Melissa Joan Heart played loudly on a tv...i think so you couldn't hear the interview going on. if that wasn't strange enough, i overheard the receptionist making interview appointments with every single person that called.

then i went in after waiting a while (the girl in front of me was in the office no more that 2 minutes which i thought strange) and I "interviewed" with Alon. He was a fast talker and made strange comments including asking if i had a boyfriend and why i was living with him and if i was set on living with him unless we broke up...VERY strange. he also said he was trying to figure out if i was jewish (i'm not). these things made me uncomfortable so i dodged out of the questions as best possible. i left feeling weird but feeling like i had just gotten the best job ever. it was strange. but i knew something just didnt feel right

luckily i found this and my suspicions were confirmed!! trust your gut! this is a huge waste of your time. its frustrating and degrading to entry level applicants - these people should be put in jail for fraud.

  6. I'm so glad I did more research on this company before I wasted my time going to the interview. I had a feeling this job was commission based. There is another company called The East Bay that is similar to this company. Manager drove me 30 min away from office and we solicited over 20 businesses trying to sell office products.

  7. Hello,
Someone please clarify... I am not sure who you are all talking about but the title of this article includes Appreciation Events and that is who I have an interview with. These blogs, however, seem to be geared towards the BAY company. If anyone has info on A.E., please contact me!! queenleen1@yahoo.com

  8. I just got home from an interview with them and I knew exactly that that was all bullchit!!!

I have been offered a full time position (no commissions) with one of their Account Managers at COSTCO. I said YES.

But am on an H1B and they wanted me to pay for the visa fees. I said YES.

They also wanted me to have my own car and, of course, no words about paying for the gas expenses. I said YES.

I have another interview tomorrow Thursday at Costco San Jose with their Account Manager.

So tomorrow, while the Account Manager waits for me at Costco, I will be having a nice day in the beach.

Thanks to all for all the info here. I could have saved the $11 on Bart that I really need now to buy a pack of cigarettes to get this stress out of me!!!!

  10. Oh wow! I just saved myself a headache. Thanks all! This will be the third "marketing" position in Walnut Creek that I've been contacted about this week. It seems that more legitimate jobs take their time in the hiring process.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I can add something to this.

The Appreciation events "division" has an office in Toronto as well.

I'm not calling this a scam but it is definitely a job process full of false promises.

I was told by the hiring manager that not one of his current "Event Co-ordinators" make less than $60,000 per year. Being fresh out of college and eager to get into the workforce I jumped at this chance.

Once I began they had me do an initial "collect 100 business cards test" I managed to do that test, one of the people hired with me got to 35 and said screw this and walked out.

Anyways they pressured all "event co-ordinators" to drive to the office North Toronto for 6:30am and then drive to your territory (hour into downtown toronto) then back up to the office at night (6pm) for another "meeting".

I stuck with this unfulfilling job for about 5 weeks until I finally said enoughs enough and just quit. I feel bad for the people still there who have not made any money for months, but are kept around by false promises from other managers and employees.

They make their money by exploiting young people eager to work.

Steer Clear of this company. Not to mention the whole set-up is a bit sketchy. They train you to flat out lie to potential clients and trick them into seting up an event.

Needless to say that horrendous job motivated me to start my own company that is doing very well. I guess the motivation came from not wanting to work for people like that.

  12. I just got an e-mail and a phone call from this company. I am so glad that I read this blog and didn't have to drive all the way out to Walnut Creek! It is sickening how employers take advantage of recent college graduates and abuse them. This guy seems like he should be investigated. I would suggest that you guys post this on Yelp. It was a bit difficult to find this blog online. The only review on Yelp is a girl that worked there for three months and loved it. Thank you so much again!

  13. I would like to second all the comments above! Just finished an "interview" where a badly dressed guy with a faux pitched his company to me. I instantly had a weird feeling about the place when I walked in. Badly decorated office, giant old tv playing Cheers and phony sports tickets on the wall. He tried to make feel dumb by saying I won't get there complex business model cause it's to hard to understand right away. He also told me there are 1 million unemployed educated people in SF and told me I was not going to find a job. Nevertheless he offered me a second round interview tomorrow with his TOP sales guy. 10 minutes after I left the office I got an email confirming the 2nd round with a girl who was going to take me around. Keep your lies straight! This was so laughable and if I didn't take four hours out if my day to go all the way to Walnut Creek I would have found this much funnier. I would like to reiterate, go with your gut! If there's no yelp info and it feels sketchy, it most likely is!

  14. Gee! Much gratitude to those of you who commented on the company called "Bay Inc." I got excited when finally someone called for an interview but i;m so glad that I researched the company via the net. I'm not going to waste my time calling for the interview this coming monday. These companies are all over the world and I was first introduced into this company 20 years ago. They are still around because of the many people that turn 18 every year and are looking for work, and stumble across their add,...get suckered in and work for a little while. I do admit that there is some positives...in door to door sales...I was very shy before....but after this job...i wasnt afraid of talking to people and I was more outgoing....but the thing one thing that I learned that was key in these type of jobs or any sales job is the law of averages...and in sales...its a numbers game....so put in the numbers.

  15. This company will not stop calling me for an interview, I sent in a resume last week for a "management training" position before I realized exactly what they were.

I had the exact same experience with a company called The East Bay in Walnut Creek. It started with a B.S. first round interview, and then an "all day interview" which was me getting driven by a sales rep out to Marin to walk door to door selling office supplies. Shit pay and they were going to make me drive my own car every day.

  16. BY THE WAY, the woman who corresponded with me from The East Bay called herself Jamie Parker, and the woman who has been trying to contact me from BAY calls herself Baily Parker. Pyramid scheme SCAM!!!!!!

  17. These comments are very true lol.

Job hunting, I applied for this job and they called me back immediately and setup an interview. They even encouraged me to look them up!

So I went in for an interview that was like 5 min and was told to come the next day. This was too good to be true, it really was.

So I go out there at 8 AM in the morning. I'm excited and ready to prove myself. I meet the "account manager" and the "apprentice" and we drive all the way from Walnut Creek to Bay Point/Pittsburg. When we got there, totally unexpected. This job is basically going up to people on the street and soliciting businesses and selling them items such as Bay Lights cruise tickets (I would've bought them though good deal lol), A's game tickets and some damn Carl's Jr vouchers! We weren't just anywhere in those areas, we were in the ghetto. We went in corner stores, mini-malls, barbershops, beauty salons, I mean it was horrible. Sadly I only had fare for Bart so I went through this hell for 8 hours! I made up a lie saying that I couldn't start until a week later in which they said they were going to call me back, never happened. Glad it didn't because I would never do something like that. By the way, that account manager must of had something in his water or on some drug because he sure was positive even though we got cussed out and almost literally got thrown out of some businesses. Hey if you like to sale stuff, work outside 6 days a week and like commission based pay (which is totally what this job is) then go for it. Otherwise is my Ludacris voice, "Don't Do It!"

  19. I am so glad I found this page. I got an email this morning stating they have looked over my resume and would like to speak with me. I'm actually not sure if I applied to them through Careerbuilder.com or not. I read the email and looked over the website and decided to call to get more information about the positions. The email stated that I could call them back and speak the Human Resources Manager, Bailey Parker. The person that answered name was Victoria and stated that she was the assistant to Mrs. Parker.

I asked Victoria about the positions available which were Retail Sales, Customer Service and one more I can't remember. All old Vicky told me was Bay Inc. was a marketing firm that worked with sports teams such as Oakland A's to Sacramento Kings, along with restaurants and golf courses. When I tried to ask what the positions entailed, Victoria immediately asked me to come in for an interview for 1pm on Monday seeing as how the positions where filling up pretty fast. (Her words exactly) I told her I would come in and check out the company to see if it was something I was interested in.

I called my mother to let her know I had an interview with a marketing firm in Walnut Creek and she asked what company. I told her it was Bay Inc. Immediately, my mother said "It's full of shit. Don't go." When I asked why, I found out that this same company sent my uncle an email stating the same exact thing that was in the email sent to me. He told my mother about the opportunity and asked her to check out some info on the company. My mother actually found this site with all of your lovely comments saving people's asses like mine. Once I read the comments, I emailed back and said I would no longer like to come to the interview so they could cancel it. They sent an email back stating they were sad that I was not interested and good luck with my job search.

So to all of you that actually went through bullshit to tell people like me horror stories about this job, I thank you. And I also thank my mom for saving my ass once again.

  20. I'm so glad people take the time to write about their experiences with these companies. I've never dealt with anything like this before as this is my first job search in a big city (I'm from a rural area). I've been recieving a ton of emails from companies like this, and two this morning from IMG and Foundation INC..very vague, no info on job description. I am not looking for another 1099 position, I am looking for w2 empoloyment with benefits so I always try to weed out what exactly they are offerring and thanks to people taking the time to post their experiences I"m not fooled into wastint time and gas to go interview with any of these BS companies. what always gets me is they say 'we found your resume on monster (or careeer builder etc) blah blah blah please email us your resume" or worse say they are reviewing my resume and will let me know if I meet their qualifications but if I"d like to schedule an interview now please call this number...if you take the time to read anything you won't be duped. Legitamate companies wouldn't approach you this way and sites like MOnster and Careerbuilder open a gateway for scams like this to get to people who are sincerely looking for employment. thanks again for all your posts

  23. Hey, guys. I appreciate you taking the time to report on this. I only wish i saw this BEFORE i went out on the first interview. I drove 4 hours to go to this interview and wasted the whole day. The company seemed legit from the phone call conversation with Melissa to checking out their website. That said, when i tried to get a little information about the job and the pay scale before going, all Melissa could do was tell me that it would be something to discuss with the hiring agent.

Immediately after i got to the location i thought something was up. Walked into their office and it looked like they were temporary and new. Their website did say that they had just renovated the place. But when i arrived i was told to fill out this short paperwork, and include my resume and 2 references. I was in a entry way with two other people, but my interview was suppose to be at 2 pm. So i already felt a bit miffed like i was just a number. That said, i had my interview with Zach, who had just been promoted. I was allowed like 5 minutes to talk about myself, and he then spent 10 minutes explaining how it all worked. At the end, he invited me back for a day long training/overview of the operation - but gave very little information. I did bring in a list of like 30 questions i could have asked, but he encouraged me to wait until next week and all my questions would be answered. I agreed, thanked him and left. After i turned my phone back on, i was greeted by an email from a friend about this company possibly being a scam (this was the website she showed me).

I am glad i found out before spending a whole day next week going door to door, (which it sounds like you have to do). But i wish i had thought to look up this company last Thursday when i first got the call.

  24. Thank you to all of you who actually went through the Bay Inc. experience and lived to share your experiences. I'm new to the world of business and after reading about door-to-door sales here, I immediately became disenchanted because that's not what the (vague) job description said. I canvassed 3 days with Grassroots Campaigns before I called quits, so I know what it's like petitioning on the streets. With Bay Inc. I had an interview scheduled for Monday but now I know it ain't going to happen! Thanks so much for the heads up!

  27. A couple of days ago I received an email from a person who identified herself as "Kayla" informing me that the hiring manager had reviewed my resume and that they would formally like to invite me to start the interview process. I suppose this flattering wording made me completely forget that I never even applied for this job!

I called immediately to set up an interview and was told that I would have a preliminary interview with a hiring manger named Zack. The day of my interview, I arrived at the office early and sat in the waiting room. Everything is very cheap and temporary looking. Not exactly what you expect from a company that claims to work with such large businesses. My interview lasted about 10-15 minutes. Zack spent a lot of time vaguely explaining the company and really making it sound like a great position.

I've been looking for a job for about 2 months now and was very eager to be told that I wa s invited back for the second round shadowing day. The morning of my scheduled 2nd interview I began to do some more research about Bay, Inc. because something started to feel "off". I couldn't get a straight answer about how compensation worked or what exactly this 10 hour day of "shadowing" entailed.

I found this blog and thank god I did because it also saved me gas money and an entire day of job hunting/interviewing. I emailed the girl that I had been speaking with, "Kayla" and informed her that I would not be coming in. Literally 2 minutes later I received a phone call from a girl that said her name was "Ciara" wanting to tell me where to park for the day. When I called her out on what I had read about the company on line she went almost blank. I directly asked specific questions and again only got very vague answers. When I told her that I didn't feel confident that this was the right position for me her tone definitely changed. The weird part was that she referenced a specific part of a conversation that I had with "Kayla", NOT "Ciara". Are they the same person?

My conclusion, while they may not be a scam they are very misleading about the position and try hook you by getting you to spend your time and money in the interview process. I bet the only reason they want to have you participate in an entire day of shadowing is so they have someone doing an entires day worth of selling for them free of charge.

  28. Damn my comment got deleted. Short version: Kayla left voicemail for interview. I checked email, one titled "response to resume" and other titled "request for interview." I checked my excel for all jobs I've applied to and did not see a BAY inc. I never even applied to this place! Then I came across this website. THANK YOU! Coldcalling for 8 hours without pay is unethical, and left without a means of transportation just makes it worse. I think it's a good idea for people to just follow the interviewer's car when they offer to "give you a ride." Just to be safe.

    1. To lilguyboi03, you comment was never deleted. A search on this blog's comments resulted in the one comment (04/23/2013 - 11:27) regarding BAY Marketing/Business Around You (Walnut Creek, CA). Did you remember to click Publish? Did you speak with Kayla?
