Grand Marketing (Grand Rapids, MI)

Grand Marketing is another independently owned Cydcor licensee.  This Cydcor affiliate resells AT&T services to consumers door-to-door.

Beware of deceptive job ads which offer entry-level training in management, marketing, and sales especially if the ads state "face-to-face" sales and no experience required.

Do you really want to do door-to-door sales for commission pay with no benefits? There is nothing wrong with commission sales as long as you are aware you would be working on commission basis with no expense (cell phone and mileage) reimbursement and no benefits. The scam is that many job advertisers will claim they will train you in marketing, management and sales with no experience required and you find out the job is door-to-door sales. If you make sufficient sales, you may be promoted to open your own independent Cydcor office and then advertise "we train you for marketing, management and sales" with no experience required, etc.

  2. I worked here for a short amount of time. In the posting and even in the interview they are ambiguous about what you will actually be doing and they refer to your job simply as sales, marketing, and management. Only on the second "interview" where they have you job shadow them that they reveal its just door-to-door AT&T U-verse sales. They then lure you in with talk of ascending the ranks in an unbelievably short amount of time and then being made into a manager, opening your own office and making incredible amounts of money for someone your age (no one who works there is over 27ish). They are very compelling and will likely gain your trust. If you accept the job offer that they make on the same day as your second interview, they will make sure you never have a chance to talk to the other new hires, lest you talk about the "out-of-the-box" activities they do to raise morale and the questionable business structure of it all... They try really hard to make it seem like you will become a manager, if only you put up with the really crappy job for a little while longer. What they don't tell you is that in order to become a manager you have to work up a whole crew of new hires underneath you and then hope that they all want to go with you when you leave to open your own office somewhere far from home.

If you are cool with the idea of doing door-to-door sales for a while and making some descent money in its own right, then have no fear of taking this job. But don't get caught up in the ideas of becoming a manager and making use of your new college degree and getting rich. Maybe one in every 30+ people that work there will ever open their own Cydcor office. This company feels like a scam, because they are deceptive and misleading about what you will do and they lead you on with promises that will never become reality in order to keep you committed to a job that most people really dislike. I learned a lot about sales in my short time there so I don't regret that little time, but i would feel really bitter if I had believed in the fantasies they try to get you to believe in and were to have spent a lot of time there.

  3. I worked for Grand Marketing for about 6 weeks. I went through the same "interview" process as everyone else I've read about on this and other sites have mentioned. I was also misled big time about the position. I was a recent college grad thinking I was making a big career move. But I had a little more at stake than most people trying out this job. I was pregnant and had moved across the state (away from everyone and everything I knew) to have a better life. I was all along in a big city without an income. Salary is based on sales commission and I'm not one to shove a product down a customer's throat, especially since I'm showing up at their door unannounced. I made $700 in the six weeks I worked there, working 11am-8pm M-F and 11am-5pm on Saturdays. I mostly worked alone, meaning I wandered around strange neighborhoods for hours by myself (pregnant), bothering people about a product they didn't want, in any weather conditions. And I mean ANY. Tornado sirens, Ozone days, severe thunderstorms... It didn't matter. This job took a physical and emotional toll on me and one day I broke down and quit. My OB-GYN was concerned for my health, my family was worried about me and constantly sending me money to get by, and I was miserable. This company had no concern for my health at all. My baby was born more than a month early with respiratory issues and I am more than convinced that the stress from this job had a lot to do with that. Job seekers BEWARE!

    1. Joanna,

Good to hear that you left. I hope all is going well with your new baby.

I left here after 3 mos of working. The people here were the only 'nice' thing. The practices, hours and constant fake morale hikes made this place horrible. Just know what you are getting into. I learned the sales process in the hardest way possible, and I am thankful for that at least, but the constant driving out of town (on my own gas no less) and other crappy work instances (getting my nicest suit/ shirts almost ruined) happened all the time.

So: Do you want to learn the sales process really quickly? Yes? do this for about 3/4 weeks, then bail.
Do you want to be lied to about work and treated horribly for weeks on end for no pay? No? walk away.

  4. Unfortunately in our ever-present job market, these "marketing" companies too often pose as Customer Service/Entry-Level Management opportunities, because they can. Honestly, for the most part these "companies" have quickly become old-school. Long gone are the door-to-door solicitation days (vacuum/floor cleaning solicitor, etc.)

I recall years back a few fly-by "talent scout" firms that were running similar scams.. advertising for "talent scouts" in order to "recruit" new models/talent. Unfortunately, these crooks have graduated to Online "modeling/talent" sites.

The whole emphasis is Research and realizing who these clowns are before contacting them: basically Caveat Emptor.

Professional sales is one thing, cold-marketing solicitation -unless that's really your bag- is a whole other deal. Thank God for technology. You can research just about any company, person, or phone at any time. Just be smart and avoid falling into these types of "work opportunities".

  5. Thank you so much for posting this website. I just spoke with them regarding an interview. I worked for a company for a month in Chicago just like this after college and had a feeling that they were the same. Thank you for saving me the gas money by not wasting my time going to the interview.

  6. There are actually two companies here. Grand isn't the one you should worry about. The one called Rapid is a partnered one I guess. I interviewed with Grand but was hired for Rapid. I quit after seeing some of the behavorial issues (not to mention the commission only door-to-door sales) of those I was around. It seemed like a good chance at management but then I found out that the next in line for management at Rapid did so by sleeping with the manager/owner Alex. Not the kind of people I want to be learning from. The opportunity isn't that bad. Just beware of who you are hired by.

  7. It sounds like they expect people to work hard. I would expect there is a great reward for great sacrifice. I guarantee no millionaire would ever snub their nose at honest hard working opportunity. I tried to find a reason why not to do this work (because it is challenging), but could not find one good reason other than "something else is easier".

If you are a sharp individual really look hard at what these complaints say:
1)It was too hard for a pregnant woman
2)I learned a lot, but it was hard
3)The people are great (except someone slept with the manager...uh HELLO - this person must be very entry level because, news flash, this happens at every company. Who is to say it is even true?...childish)
4)they work long hours and expect a lot out of their people (is this what good or bad companies expect?)
5)lastly, Read between the lines. These people are complainers with bad attitudes. Are you really going to take their word for it? there are winners and losers in life. winners get going when its tough, losers throw in the towel. these may be respectable people that complained, but the fact is they failed at something they set out to do. Its annoying to deal with people that always have an excuse. right? BTW Guess what happens when you take advice from failures?

    1. I worked there for a couple of months, and its fairly obvious that this guy^ is still under their delusional spell. This was not my first job and I am very aware of the difference between 'hard work' and being used. I worked out my average hourly wage and thats what made me quit. Guess what it was? $2.30.

  9. I recently interviewed here, was offered a position, but took a position with a real marketing company. No idea what the relationship issue thing is about but I can say this...

    100% commission
    Door-to-Door sales
Promise of management and own office from the first interview
6 days a week, all weather. no compensation for gas, travel, etc.

It is pretty unprofessional from the glimpse I saw. Management swore in front of me, inappropriate dress code (despite being in "suits"), but what do you expect... Young managers, even younger employees, and cleary no standards for behavior.

Glad I didn't take it... especially after seeing the comment about "too hard for a pregnant woman." Obviously someone who works here wrote that entire comment... I dont care if its hard work. But who says something like that in defense of a company??

  10. Fortunately the other guy responded so i saw this. BTW I APOLOGIZE IF I MAKE MISTAKES IN MY PUNCTUATION AND GRAMMAR. THIS IS BLOGGING, NOT EXPOSITORY WRITING.

I do not work there. I do similar work and was looking at the company. Dont be so defensive sir.

Very similarly to before, let me translate AROD's rant.

HE was offered 100% commission. Probably because he would have been a risk to hire. Guaranteeing him pay must've been viewed as risky. As a person working in HR I know we only offer to pay people based on what they can prove they can do.

Door to Door - they told me on the phone it was based on leads. Are you sure you arent angry about something?

They promised you management or said there is an opportunity? Big difference.

6 days a week - once again it sounds like an opportunity dressed in workman's clothes.

I am only on here because I am in a similar position/industry and I wanted to see what Grand was about. I am tired of people like you complaining about opportunities.

This is a bathroom stall. anyone can write anything...you may as well write "for a good time call 555 555 5555". I have yet to have any of those good time promises hold true:) They are false statements, probably a lot like the statements on here.

People never go out of their way to say nice things. Maybe we should interview with the company so we arent taking your work for it.

"why" "did" "you" "put" "quotes" "around" the word "suits"? you seem angry for some reason. we dont find your word reliable.

I apologize for the "pregnant woman" comment, but lets be honest. In the movie ROCKY Adrian couldnt carry the dog food anymore when she was pregnant. Its a well known fact that pregnant women should take it easy. Dont be so defensive.

  11. Why do you so passionately defend this company? If you're in favor of them, fine. If someone else has an opposing view, fine. You can always disagree in a civil fashion. There's no reason to make condescending remarks.

Sir, if you find this blog to be so inaccurate and can't stop attacking people with a differing view, please stop coming here.

  12. i find blogging an enjoyable forum to challenge people's way of thought. I am not as passionate as i am logical- just read what i said and understand I wrote it while laughing and having fun. In no way did i intend to offend you!

  13. I'm happy I found this and other websites saying this company is a scam (or at least not worth working there for an extended amount of time). I was called today and scheduled an interview for Tuesday, but thanks to the reviews of this company I will not be going. It is too far away and not worth moving just to live off of commission.

  14. Thanks!!! Just moved back from Shanghai, China and was going to drive from Grand Blanc to Grand Rapids to interview with them in the morning. I am so sick of these scam companies TEM.Co is another one that puts you in a Box Store for 12.00 an hour unless you sell and the hours 55+ a week.
